Tsuba were not merely functional parts of a sword. Over centuries, they developed into highly refined works of decorative art, reflecting the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility of Japan’s samurai culture. Here, the distinctive forms of tsuba are elegantly depicted in maki-e, creating a striking contrast against the warm, richly aged lacquer. A particularly charming detail is revealed when the lids are lifted: the undersides are also decorated with maki-e. This hidden decoration reflects a distinctly Japanese appreciation for beauty in details that are not immediately visible. Elegant yet understated, these bowls can be enjoyed at the table or appreciated as decorative objects. They bring together Japanese lacquer craftsmanship, maki-e artistry, and the refined aesthetics of sword culture in one distinctive set. A wonderful choice for collectors of Japanese antiques, lacquerware, samurai art, and traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Beauty to be discovered not only at first glance, but also when the lid is opened.
